This will probably be uncomfortable for all of us.

I'd like to offer moral support, but I have questionable morals. (Cis/bi/magical realism girl.)

I’ve started reading Red Dragon again, which is kind of interesting because the last time I read it was before Hannibal season 1.

And while I think Manhunter is a fantastic movie and Red Dragon the movie is a piece of shit, the thing I am equally mad at both of them about is that they both save Will’s marriage.

You know me, sad endings are not My Thing! I get sad about games with birds and fluffy dogs if the endings only have SOME characters happy.

But the collapse of the Graham marriage is the huge neon exception for me. It’s such a perfectly executed, downright balletic, tragedy from the very first words of the book. It… okay, so I remember in email once trying to explain it to Minna, and what I said was basically that Jack is Batman.

And at the end of the issues or the movies or whatever, the Joker’s gotta get locked up. But Batman can’t win either, because he’s Batman — the point is that Gotham always beats them both. The house wins.

Hannibal’s Gotham. Hannibal’s the house, and Hannibal always wins. So if you leave Will’s marriage intact and happy, if you leave his relationship with his stepson unharmed, if you make his scars less visible, less extensive, less ruinous… you’re trying to claim that Batman (and by extension Batman’s Robins, Will and Clarice, who… have about as much luck as Robins do) can ever beat Gotham.

  3. ah the before watchmen problem: why read/watch the thing when you are quite sure you can find/have authored better fanfic

    Goofy Batman by notalkingplz

It’s a well known fact that the one thing Batman didnt spend 7 years training for was a sense of humor, but that’s only until you get to know him! The truth is, even someone as smart as Bruce Wayne would have to be able to take a look at his life and laugh at how over-the-top ridiculous it was. Tumblr artist notalkingplz also trained for 7 years in the art of irreverent sketches, you can check out his work at any of the links below for more asskicking and brain-flaying doodles.

    not batman, bruce wayne

living in the city that killed your parents, watching the crime and poverty (sitting on piles of money and wondering if you should be doing something but you can’t stay awake long enough to think anything through) (oh god)

waking up in the middle of the day covered in bruises and aching (the gossip says you were partying all night but there’s no one else in your bed) (oh god oh god)

no one talks to you no one actually talks real words to you and worse they have no idea how to listen (worst of all you have no idea what to say) (what day is it) (what is the year)

there’s headline after headline after headline with this thing this dark nightmare shape and you see it at the edges of your vision (you saw it before the headlines) (you’ve been seeing it for years)

there’s something out there in the night but it’s dark and you’re tired and you close your eyes and dream of being something else (imagine yourself a hero) (heroes aren’t real)

    anyway i made a mix

Lazy Oaf x Batman Collection Channels ’90s Batmania [link]

British creative label Lazy Oaf launched a Batman-inspired apparel collection for both men and women, just in time to celebrate the success of The Dark Knight Rises. Known for their bright, pop culture-infused graphics inspired by fast food and Disney, the East London-based design team’s take on Batman channels the fun, kitschy side of the Dark Knight. From cropped baseball tees to logo-splattered dresses, the Lazy Oaf x Batman collection is actually quite reminiscent of the material we saw in Batmania craze of the early ’90s that followed the popularity of Tim Burton’s first Batman film.

Some of the items are currently sold out, however Lazy Oaf will be restocking the collection within the next couple of weeks. Fortunately, this gives me enough time to scrounge up some of my leftover SDCC pocket change to pick up a few items for myself!

Check out the entire Lazy Oaf x Batman collection on ComicsAlliance!

Only in this last sense can the projection of conservative politics onto The Dark Knight Rises be understood: the only thing the League of Shadows shares with the Occupy movement is an ideological commitment to frightening white people. That both are successful says nothing about the film, but speaks volumes about the conservatives watching it, who have invested so heavily in their illegible projection that they makes claims like:

“Gotham City is thriving as the third film in the trilogy opens. Harvey Dent’s legal legacy is so profound there’s no longer a need for Batman. He’s retired, bum knees and all, while crime continues to decline. So clearly the city’s punitive system isn’t corrupt, and we certainly don’t see mass economic woes.”

Toto is wrong on all counts. Far from “thriving,” Gotham is a city in which orphans have taken to living in the sewers to survive. Dent’s legal legacy may be “profound,” but it’s also founded a lie and maintained by mass incarceration. Crime “continues to decline,” but the prisons overflow with criminals whose prosecutions were legitimate, because “the city’s punitive system isn’t corrupt,” so all those prisoners must have committed the crimes of which they’re accused. Finally, Toto fails to “see mass economic woes,” even though, to return to where this chain of inept summation began, ophans have taken to living in the sewers to survive.
